Hello Wonderful Technology Researchers:
Here is your homework. Follow directions and blog by Sunday April 17, midnight.
1. State your research topic in the form of a question you will answer.
2. Find two sources using guidelines given by research librarian.
3. Give a brief summary, in your own words, of what you found in each piece of research and how it will help you with your research essay.
4. Post link to each piece of research in the blog, stating title of article.
Example of thesis question using "social robot" topic: What are the benefits and dangers of using social robots like Paro the seal for special populations like the elderly?
Example of brief summary of an article:
Sherry Turkle in her article, "Love's Labours Lost: How Robots Will Transform Human Intimacy," argues that robots will care for us effectively and we may become dependent upon them but they won't ever love us. "They will be able to offer companionship to lonely people without being companions" (Turkle). She also discusses robots as lovers and argues that "they may become more attractive than humans as companions" (Turkle). I will use Turkle's arguments to show the dangers of bringing robots into our homes. http://www.philosophersbeard.org/2013/12/loves-labours-lost-how-robots-will.html
Please read to Chapter 20 of The Office of Mercy by Monday!
What are the stages and the preventive measures and cure of Alzheimers disease affecting the elderly society?
ReplyDeleteBased on Gwyther, Lisa P in her article, "Aging" she goes into details discussing the three stages of Alzheimers disease. She states that "more than 100,000 die of alzheimers disease annually, which makes it the fourth leading cause of death in adults, after heart disease, cancer, and stroke." I will use this source to talk about the stages of Alzheimers.
http://web.a.ebscohost.com.rpa.laguardia.edu:2048/ehost/detail/detail?vid=8&sid=1ce9c90a-e8fb-4f59-83c5-099d7546886c%40sessionmgr4004&hid=4204&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#AN=9209210846&db=a9h
According to Misra, Shubham in her article "Drug development status for Alzheimers disease present scenario" she reports that "many clinical and experimental studies are ongoing, but we need to acknowledge that a single cure for Alzheimers disease is unlikely to be found and that the approach to drug development for this disorder needs to be considered." In other words, although there is no cure for Alzheimers disease, there are treatments the prolong for patients awareness and memory. I will use this source to talk about the cure.

This topic could work Kassandra--but remember the focus needs to be on how technology might help victims of Alzheimers--what are the actual treatments your articles discuss and what is your position?
DeleteEthical Issues in Field Trials of Genetically Modified Disease Resistant Mosquitos
ReplyDeletehttp://web.a.ebscohost.com.rpa.laguardia.edu:2048/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=ce3f09c4-1128-444a-988b-e500bbfca1b6%40sessionmgr4003&vid=2&hid=4101
People all over the world face health risks from diseases related to mosquito bites. There are effective treatments to mosquito born illnesses however prevention is the preferred method of treatment. This is because of several factors, one of them being that treatment won't be available to some due to cost. Current preventive measures against mosquitos are not 100% effective and can pose risk to human/environmental health. More research is needed on public health/ environmental impacts of genetically modified mosquitos before they can be released into the wild.
The Analysis of two Island groups as potential sites for trials of transgenic mosquitoes for Malaria Control
http://web.a.ebscohost.com.rpa.laguardia.edu:2048/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=1dee39da-2f4c-40c0-870b-1175f19a2394%40sessionmgr4004&vid=1&hid=4101
Many technological advances have been made towards the genetically modified mosquito. However, less progress has been made towards field evaluations of these mosquitos. Oceanic islands are perfect places for such research to be conducted because of their isolation. The island of Grande Comore is believed to be a perfect place for such research because it is genetically isolated from adjacent islands.
Very interesting--you will need to decide if you favor releasing genetically modified mosquitos--why, why not--this is a good science topic but you will need to develop your own position!
DeleteIs it possible for Robots to have a human consciousness and if so would that mean they would have rights and have to follow the law ?
ReplyDelete“Creation of A Conscious Mind” by Junichi Takeno explains that soon humans will be able to create machines that mirror us. These machines will be able to have feelings just like us . They will have a consciousness and also like humans they will be able to learn from their mistakes and grow from them. Although this seems like a Science fiction story its actually closer then you think . Selmor Bringsjord , a Professor of cognitive science, has already ran the test of the first robot to pass a self awareness test ! I will use both Takeno’s and Bringsjord’s arguments on artificial intelligence to determine if robots can actually have a human conscious. And if so would that mean they would have to follow laws and have rights , and also should we embrace this or be petrified.

ReplyDeleteMedia and Its Danger on Teenager
ReplyDeleteHaugen, David in his article, “Depression” talks about a lot of different sources of media, such as televisions, video games, but Internet have become a big part on most of children’s daily life. Nowadays, large percentage of people are using smartphones and those people becoming addicted to social media. The rising use of media has led to negative influences on the youngest generation for many reasons. I want to talk about the negative effect of smartphones on teenagers.

ReplyDeleteWhat are the benefits and dangers of pet cloning?
ReplyDelete1) Nell Boyce and Katherine Hobson in their article "Pets of the Future" state that the market for cloned pets already exists, since there are millions of pets in the USA and people spend billions of dollars on their animals. There are a few companies "that offer [pets'] DNA banking" and "hundreds of people have already signed up". The authors speak about some benefits of animal cloning, such as saving threatened species or producing "ideal dogs for police work or helping the disabled". Also, scientists can use genetic selection in cloning process to delete the genes responsible for diseases or even to create "allergen-free cat".
The article also reveals some disadvantages of cloning. Besides clones' health risks and "shortened life span", scientists do not guarantee a completely identical pet. There are lots of other "random factors like womb environment affect fur color" or some other factors, like accident occurred in childhood, which shaped the personality and behavior of the original animal. So, people who decided to clone their beloved pet should realize that it won't be the same animal though it is “genetically identical".
Another issue which was raised in this article is that animals with unusual and unnatural traits are in demand now, so it can lead to "some company ... will end up making them" and it "will turn them [cloned pets] into mere objects like a TV". And all this can change people as well, like thinking that pets, parents, and friends are replaceable.
http://web.b.ebscohost.com.rpa.laguardia.edu:2048/ehost/detail/detail?vid=15&sid=7a86fe07-f63b-4cea-af25-408db5ea8eb6%40sessionmgr114&hid=101&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#AN=6265693&db=a9h
2) In the article "Double Trouble" the author, Thornton, Gus W., speaks about dangers of animal cloning. He points out that scientists are still working on this process to make it more efficient, which requires many animals to "suffer abnormalities that soon kill them or cause them live in pain".
The author also argues that there should be special organizations "to carefully monitor and reassess the experiments" since "the results [of cloning and bioengineering] are often unpredictable". The main point of Gus Thornton to protest against a pet cloning is that "the same genes don't necessarily add up to the same animal". So, he suggests to adopt one instead of "genetically duplicating a pet", plus adoption is much cheaper.

Marina--fascinating topic! I'm amazed so many people are interested in cloning their animals--good research on health dangers for the animals--and the unpredictability issue is important I guess because people can sue?

ReplyDeleteCarbon Neutral is equalizing the source of pollution like factories and emissions by planting more trees and going green which can absorb more carbon dioxide.
ReplyDeleteWhat are the advantages, what causes these climate changes, what are the consequences of global warming sooner or later? Who are the victims of global warming? And how going carbon neutral will help in what ways for entire world.
I will use;
1.Carbon neutral village/cluster: a conceptual framework for envisioning; to show and describe how global warming affects and how? As Mihie Mathur and Suchita Awasth has proved in their article “ Carbon neutral village/cluster: a conceptual framework for envisioning”. “One of the drivers of climate change has been the continuous increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission. If these emissions continue to increase at the current rate then it would push the carbon cycle out of its dynamic equilibrium, which may lead to irreversible changes in the climate system. Thus, it is imperative to initiate systemic changes through various socio-economic and technological interventions to mitigate emissions and enhance sinks” (Mihir,Suchita).

2.Mark Whitman in his article "should becoming carbon neutral be part of your carbon management strategy" explains what is carbon neutral and how it is useful in a carbon management strategy and also what is the best carbon offset programs.” Calming carbon neutrality can be a great way to demonstrate your commitment to environmental improvement” (Mark)
http://www.sustainablebusinesstoolkit.com/becoming-carbon-neutral-carbon-management/
I will use their statements to support and prove why it is important to go carbon neutral and be healthy with healthy climate.
Selden--this is potentially a good topic but I am a little worried about the complicated language used in the above--you need a topic you can speak about in your own words, using research as support for YOUR position. So the topic needs to be simple enough for non-scientists (like you and me and class) to understand--phrases like 'conceptual framework" "anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission" "dynamic equilibrium" etc are over my head--how about yours?

ReplyDeleteHow can artificially GM crops and GM foods can be good for our future?
"Genetically Modified Food: A Short Guide for the Confused" by Andy Rees explains the risks and dangers of genetically modified foods (GMO's). How genetically modified crop biotechnology industry and national governments unnecessary push this failing technology on the whole world population. As a result it's not surprising to find that there have now been numerous laboratory studies showing potential health-damaging effects from the consumption of GM foods, which have been systematically denied.
I will use Rees's arguments to show the health dangers of continuing GM crops in the world.
https://libsearch-cuny-edu.rpa.laguardia.edu/F/XEQQTCSMRPM7HVRREASFLDMI93HYT84CD5VFEVKINJN927KCC3-05299?func=full-set-set&set_number=004885&set_entry=000011&format=999
According to Ferrie Helke in his article "Evidence grows of harmful effects of GMOs on human health" points out on the dangers of eating genetically modified food (GMO). He states that Canada's legislators have rejected people's demand to label GMOs as it will only confuse the public. He believes that people must be given informed food choices especially that there is a growing evidence of GMOs' harmful effects on human health. These evidences include a research which found 93 percent of fetuses and their mothers contaminated with GMO-related toxins. I will use Helke's arguments as well to show the health dangers of consuming GM foods.

Great topic Marta--I look forward to learning about the dangers of GMOs--and why scientists are/are not concerned about the toxins!
DeleteWhat are memory enhancements? And who benefits from it? the disadvantages they may cause on society?
ReplyDelete“Forgetfulness is a common failing of old age that patent medicines once promised to cure. Some drugs in development are designed to help people with Alzheimer's disease or other brain disorders”(Marshall). In the article A Star-Studded Search for Memory-Enhancing Drugs by Marshall Eliot, explains Alzheimer’s disease, brain disease and memory drug development. With an increased of importance to develop a new way that target serious diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, memory enhancement drugs are becoming a growing business. These same drugs are also creating a huge controversy over the benefits and dangers this enhancers may cause to society. In this essay I will be discussing the benefits of memory enchantments to Alzheimer's patients. As well as the disadvantages to society, when taking these drugs as "performance enhancers" to gain a competitive advantage in the workplace. Using Marshall article I will show the importance of memory enhancements in Alzheimer patients.

Excellent topic Tyeast--good research and explanation--so as I understand you, you will be comparing the benefits of the drug for "cure" or improvement of condition for people with Alzheimers to "enhancement" of memory for those who are not ill!

ReplyDeleteWhat is smart phone? How does smart phone develop? How does smart phone changes in people’s life?
ReplyDeleteThis article talk about the smartphone is very useful, and explain the progress about smartphone. Scientists combine functions of normal cell phone and computer together. Before the smartphone came out. People only use cell phone, but cell phone doesn’t work like computer. However, computer has many functions, but we can people use computer. At before they are “two separate devices that did very different things.”
As we know the famous smart phone company is Apple. After that there are also another smart phone system calls android which is used by so many smart phone.
Also the E-COMMERCE, help the economy develop.

DeleteWhat are the advantages bionic athletes have over normal athletes?
ReplyDeleteIn the article "Up close and personal with an Orthopedist", the author, Dave Kindred, speaks on the types of injuries sports players deal with and how its dealt with. Injuries are usually dealt with in a long period of time. A doctor came up with an idea to heal injuries quicker which are "green pills".
http://web.b.ebscohost.com.rpa.laguardia.edu:2048/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?sid=0f5f1ce1-00cc-481d-9403-72917af12d03%40sessionmgr120&vid=10&hid=124
In the book "The Case against Perfection", the author, Michael Sandel speaks on parents genetically making their children into bionic athletes. Traits where their children can be a natural in sports.
http://web.b.ebscohost.com.rpa.laguardia.edu:2048/ehost/detail/detail?vid=11&sid=0f5f1ce1-00cc-481d-9403-72917af12d03%40sessionmgr120&hid=124&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d
Ray--good focus--would like to know more about the green pills--what they contain, what they do and how doctors feel about them--if there are any negative effects--you will have to specify how this is related to "enhancement"--you need also to read Sandel carefully--not just about being "natural"in sports but being enhanced!
DeleteDo you feel being a bionic athlete is a respectable and ethical way to obtain superior athleticism?
ReplyDeleteIs there a difference in taking bionics to help you become faster or stronger different than taking enhancements respectable to the society such as protein or steroids?
How do you feel towards someone taking genetic enhancements to become a bionic athlete, is it fair to your competitors who are performing at the natural level?
Sandel, Michael J.

Publisher Cambridge, Mass. : Belknap Press, 2009
Www.nebulabot.com/future-athletes.htm
blog.talkingphilosophy.com/?p=8277
I mainly found in Sandel’s book theories of questions to ask relating to the topic of fairness of competition and where to draw the line of following the norms of society.
From nebulabot.com I found the ethics pertaining to whether it would be accepted or not to the sport
From talkingphilosophy.com I found out what people think, what players think and how to determine if it’s a asset or liability.
I support bionic athletes limited to them doing things within the acceptance of society, natural supplements and if they need bionic body parts to fix the damage to their natural bodies such as injuries. I draw the line where athletes are using it to just gain superiority in their fields, for example to win or taking the easy way out to win.
Excellent questions and focus Faisal--start to create an outline of pros and cons! Good to have athletes' perspective as well as scientists and general audience--eg sports goers.

ReplyDeleteAre we ready for using the social robot? Do you know what are the benefits and dangers of using social robots?
ReplyDeleteIn article"Sociable Robots and the Future of Social Relations", by Seibt, J.
Nørskov, M. Hakli, R.,the author states that, the robotics industry is growing rapidly, and to a large extent the development of this market sector is due to the area of social robotics – the production of robots that are designed to enter the space of human social interaction, both physically and semantically.
Social robotics is still in its early stages, but it is precisely now that we need to reflect its possible cultural repercussions. Technology which affects the core of our current social practices and might lead to profound cultural and social change.

Love your topic Jisoo--do you know what it means to enter the space of human social itneraction...semantically? (I'm not sure!) You need another source and you should look at the AMC series, Humans! Then read outline handout so you can talk about benefits and dangers.

ReplyDeleteHave you ever heard about genetically modified food? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?
ReplyDelete"Genetically Modified Crops could increase productivity to end world hunger"by Erik Vance points out a new revolution is occurring in agricultural research that uses genetic engineering, along with organic farming,to increase food productivity and security.
Erik Vance,"Genetically Modified Conservation,"Conservation Magazine,vol.11,no.3,July/September 2010.
However, the disadvantage of genetically modified food cannot be ignored.
In"Genetically Modified Foods Could Pose Numerous Health Risks," Institute for Responsible Technology claim several animals studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food. These include:infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, faulty insulin regulation and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system.
"Doctors'Health Warning:Avoid Genetically Modified Foods," Institute for Responsible Technology,2011.
